2008 Press Release

Now in its 18th year, competitive freeskiing arrives once again at Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort for the 11th Annual Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Nationals. Registration for the event, which is part of both the Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Series and the Freeskiing World Tour, filled in only two days.

Competitors from around the globe including the United States, Canada, Argentina, Sweden, Japan and France, will battle it out for their piece of the competition’s $12,500 cash purse. With approximately 200 competitors attending, the reigning champions Drew Tabke, Aurelien Ducroz and Jess McMillan will have their work cut out for them as they try to hold onto their titles. Also in attendance will be the Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Tour’s overall men’s points leader Griffin Post and women’s points leader Hannah Whitney. Other contenders to watch include local favorites Cliff Bennett and Tanya Christensen.

“The 40 feet of snow that has fallen so far this year has created plenty of new lines and natural features for the local and international talent to explore,” said Snowbird President Bob Bonar. “All of the snow combined with the terrain Snowbird is famous for is sure to set the stage for a gripping, eye-catching big mountain event.”

The world’s toughest skiers push their limits on Snowbird’s steep terrain during the Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Nationals. The event takes place over four days on various venues in Snowbird’s Peruvian Gulch, likely including multiple days on different faces of Mt. Baldy.

“This new era of Big Mountain Freeskiing was born over 10 years ago with the first Subaru U.S. Freeskiing Nationals at Snowbird. A decade later this event continues to showcase the skill, passion, energy and soul of winter sports,” said Mountain Sports International President Adam Comey. “With the incredible season Snowbird has been enjoying this winter, I’m really looking forward to seeing these skiers pushing their talents in world-class terrain!”

A live webcast of the competition will be presented at 10 a.m. MST Friday, March 21, and Saturday, March 22, with a re-broadcast airing at 6 p.m. MST each day. For more information visit www.usfreeskiing.com which features state-of-the-art video and photo player technology and daily uploads of video, photos, news and results of each day’s competition.
